What Are We Studying?

Happy Fall! As we head into November our 1st graders will take their first quiz. Classes 1-202, 1-214 and 1-219 will take it the week of November 10th. Classes 1-212 and 1-203 will take it the week of November 17th. We should all be on the same schedule for the next quiz. There were a lot of holidays this start of the school year and I tried to keep the amount of times I saw everyone around the same. Below is a link for the review sheet that all students will be getting the week before their class quiz. If you have any questions, please reach out through Konstella.

Счастливой осени! В ноябре наши первоклассники пройдут свой первый тест. Классы 1-202, 1-214 и 1-219 будут сдавать его на неделе 10 ноября. Классы 1-212 и 1-203 – на неделе 17 ноября. Расписание на следующий тест у всех будет одинаковым. В начале учебного года было много праздников, и я старалась, чтобы количество встреч было одинаковым. ¡Feliz otoño! Al comenzar noviembre, nuestros alumnos de primer grado realizarán su primer examen. Las clases 1-202, 1-214 y 1-219 lo harán la semana del 10 de noviembre. Las clases 1-212 y 1-203 lo harán la semana del 17 de noviembre. Todos deberíamos tener el mismo horario para el próximo examen. Hubo muchos días festivos al inicio del año escolar y procuré mantener la misma frecuencia de contacto con todos. A continuación, encontrarán un enlace a la hoja de repaso que todos los alumnos recibirán la semana anterior al examen de su clase. Si tienen alguna pregunta, pueden comunicarse con Konstella.

Thank you for visiting our 1st Grade Science page to find out more about what your student will be learning in science this year. Teaching is really a team effort and you are a very important part of our team!

A little about me for those who are new to our school...I have been teaching for several years and this is my 8th year teaching science. I started teaching Science using the Amplify science program the first year it was introduced to the NYCDOE. It was a very exciting process to be a part of!

Our 1st Grade  students will study 3 Science Units in depth. Within each of these units they will learn ideas and concepts that they will be able to generalize to real world situations. All of Amplify's units incorporate the Next Generation Science Standards as well as help prepare our students by building  a strong foundation in science. Students will be using earlier learned  concepts again in later grades as they travel through school. 

Our first unit of Amplify Science is called "Animal and Plant Defenses" Our 1st Graders are going to take on the role of student scientists to help a group of fictional kids who are very concerned with the safety of a Sea Turtle named Spruce. Spruce has been living in the aquarium her whole life and now is big enough to be let into the ocean. The fictional students are afraid of the sharks and other predators that might harm Spruce. Our 1st graders will work as scientists studying what defenses Spruce will have to keep her safe. They will use this knowledge to explain how Spruce and her offspring will survive against any animal that might want to eat her. They will also learn about other defenses animals use such as spikes, armor and camouflage.

Students gather evidence through careful observations of photographs and videos of real organisms and by reading science texts. Students create multiple models throughout the unit to explain their ideas about how defenses function. They apply their knowledge to two other challenges along the way—first by making a model that shows a way to defend the aquarium’s animal food supply from being eaten by wildlife, and then by making a model of a sea creature’s defense against being eaten. By the end of the unit, students will be able to use ideas of structure and function to explain how a wide variety of animals and plants and their offspring defend themselves from being eaten.

Gracias por visitar nuestra página de Ciencias de 1er grado para obtener más información sobre lo que su estudiante aprenderá en ciencias este año. ¡La enseñanza es realmente un esfuerzo de equipo y usted es una parte muy importante de nuestro equipo!

Un poco sobre mí ... He estado enseñando durante varios años y este es mi quinto año enseñando ciencias. Comencé a enseñar ciencias usando el programa de ciencias Amplify el primer año que me presenté al NYCDOE. ¡Fue un proceso muy emocionante ser parte del mismo!

Nuestros estudiantes de 1er grado estudiarán en profundidad 3 Unidades de Ciencias. Dentro de cada una de estas unidades aprenderán ideas y conceptos que podrán generalizar a situaciones del mundo real. Todas las unidades de Amplify incorporan los Estándares de Ciencias de la Próxima Generación y ayudan a preparar a nuestros estudiantes al construir una base sólida en las ciencias. Los estudiantes volverán a utilizar conceptos aprendidos anteriormente en los grados posteriores mientras viajan por la escuela.

Nuestra primera unidad de Amplify Science se llama "Defensas de animales y plantas". Nuestros estudiantes de primer grado asumirán el papel de estudiantes científicos para ayudar a un grupo de niños ficticios que están muy preocupados por la seguridad de una tortuga marina llamada Spruce. Spruce ha estado viviendo en el acuario toda su vida y ahora es lo suficientemente grande como para dejarla entrar al océano. Los estudiantes de ficción temen a los tiburones y otros depredadores que podrían dañar a Spruce.
